[edit] Folds

[edit] Overview

Tie-dyed fabric or garments are folded into a variety of patterns and bound. The folds and the binds don't only make patterns, but they guide the dyer in applying various colors of dye.

The three most common folds are the accordion fold, the spiral, and the scrunch or Chaos patterns. The patterns can be varied and combined in a number of ways to make more complex patterns. Some of the most complex combinations of folds are used to make mandalas.

The accordion fold involves pleating the fabric about 1/2-1 inch in height along straight lines or more complex designs. The pleats may go across the entire fabric, or a portion of the fabric and combined with other folds, or not.

The spiral folding technique can be used to make a spider pattern, double spiral, and (combined with the accordion fold) an Indian Spiral.

Whatever folds are used, folding is much easier with damp fabric.
