Tie-dye is a technique for decorating fabric using resists created by making folds and binding the fabric. The folded and bound cloth resists the dye creating patterns. Traditionally the dye was applied by dipping the fabric or parts of the fabric in vats of dye which is referred to as dip-dyeing. Now tie-dye is usually done through direct application where the dye is applied using squirt bottles, syringes, or foam brushes.

Most tie-dye is created using fiber-reactive dyes on cotton or rayon fabric.
